The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway (RWJUH Rahway) Women’s Golf Outing and Clinic returns on Aug. 2 at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains.

Golfers of all skill levels will enjoy a full day of activities. The event begins with registration/breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and continues at 9:30 a.m. with game play and clinic. “This outing is unique in that it is not just an opportunity for experienced golfers to play an 18-hole course,” said Heather Hays, vice president of development for RWJUH Rahway. “Novice golfers will have the chance to participate in a clinic where they will learn how to hit the ball, along with golf etiquette and how to navigate a course. To wrap it all up, they will play a 9-hole course with the golf pros from Shackamaxon Country Club.”

Game play is followed at 2 p.m. with a luncheon, panel discussion and raffle.  “This event historically has been an opportunity to empower and enable women, both on and off the course,” Hays said. “This year we are placing an increased focus on networking and building connections among those in the workforce. To that end, the luncheon will feature an insightful panel of women professionals who will discuss the importance of networking.”

A variety of sponsorship packages remains available, each of which carries a number of unique benefits, including complimentary game play and marketing/branding opportunities.  Packages include Event Sponsor (30 golfers, premier signage at the event and on all marketing materials, and social media posts), Title Sponsor (20 golfers and event signage), Lunch Sponsor (10 golfers and event signage), Clinic Sponsor (five golfers and event signage), Beverage Cart Sponsor (two golfers and event signage), Hole Sponsor (signage at event and individual golfer).

Throughout the day of the event, attendees can donate to the hospital and will be entered to win one of two prizes (a wine basket or a “spa retreat in a box”). Those individuals who wish to make their monetary gift recurring will be entered into a separate raffle for the chance to win an in-home wine tasting for up to 10 people.

The outing has raised about $100,000 since first teeing off in 2018. “The origin of this event stemmed from a gathering that involved teaching some of our colleagues to drive, then navigate, a golf course,” Hays said. “We announced to those in attendance that we would be hosting a small event to continue that level of empowerment, encouragement and education. We hoped 20 women would join us and within 24 hours, had 60 women sign up. We could not have imagined that what started as a grassroots effort to teach women to feel comfortable on the golf course would turn into a network of women leveling the executive playing field and breaking the ‘grass ceiling.’ ”

In years past, proceeds from the Women’s Golf Outing and Clinic have funded community education programs and services, capital improvement projects/building renovations, and purchase of new equipment and technology.  “Monies raised from the 2021 event will be used locally to support our Healthcare Heroes, patient care services and facilities,” Hays said. “After having to cancel our 2020 outing due to COVID-19, we are looking forward to gathering for a day of networking and camaraderie.”
